If you're considering scheduling a family photo shoot, you may have come across the term "lifestyle" family photos in your search for the perfect family photographer. This is a newly popular concept in the photography industry and the term may not be widely known. So, what does it mean? In simple terms, it describes photos that aim to capture interaction and connection between family members instead of having everyone posed and looking directly at the camera.
In traditional studio photography and outdoor portraiture, the photographer typically arranges the subjects in an aesthetically pleasing pose, then has everyone look at the camera and smile. While this is still a necessary part of photography (think family portraits at a wedding or team photos, etc), many families have found a love for photos that capture the true character and essence of their loved ones.
When you book lifestyle family photos, we will certainly take a few photos of the whole family looking at the camera because, let's face it, this is the photo that grandma wants for her wall =). But then we'll also move into more interactive photography. I typically direct you into a casual pose to help ensure the best lighting and then I'll ask you to look at each other, to have the kids play with something in the environment, to have a tickle fight , give hugs or nuzzles, and tell each other silly jokes. These moments, when you're goofing around with your favorite people, are when the magic happens. We get great, genuine smiles and laughter; looks of pride and love between parents and children. I also get the joy of capturing photos of snuggly moments that you are typically too busy cherishing to consider snapping a photo of for your memory books.
Lifestyle family photos can take place outdoors at a park or other location that your family loves to spend time together. They can also be taken in your home as more of a documentary style. I would love to take photos of your family playing together. Do you like to bake cookies, as a family, play board games, or do puzzles together?
